Women’s Museum in Tirana

  • The Women’s Museum is a story of Albanian women through well-known and unknown events.

The woman in this museum travels in time through objects, documents, and photos toward the museum’s goal of better discovering the role of women in society and family in her monologue with herself and her dialogue with the man.
Clothing, personal belongings, bags, and hats are pleasant discoveries for those who do not know Albania of the ’20s and ’30s, while various documents and publications show that the history of true intellectuals began before the creation of the Albanian state.
Visitors will discover a vast world of passion, creativity, and women’s strength on the small surface of an apartment built in the 1960s.
The museum places special importance on education; schoolchildren and young people are always welcomed, not only as visitors but also as debaters on issues of women’s role in society.

The Women’s Museum (MiG) is an initiative of Elsa Ballauri, a journalist, human rights activist, and passionate antiques collector.

The museum adds value to the cultural sites in Tirana, showing another untold part of Albanian history: the role of women. “Women are the ones who write about the history of the world. There has to be a women’s museum in every country in the world.” Shirin Ebadi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

This quote is written at the entrance of this unique museum. You will be amazed by the story of Albanian solid women interpreted by the founder, Elsa Ballauri.
