Swan Lake
International Dance Festival of Tirana.
After “Snow White” and “Romeo and Juliet,” Angelin Preljocaj returns to narrative ballet and his love for storytelling.
By blending Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece with more contemporary arrangements, he tackles this classical repertory monument. The work, which began in 2018 with “Ghost,” already honored Marius Petipa by projecting himself into the choreographer’s imagination at the time the idea for “Swan Lake” was conceived.
Staying true to the original piece, it tells the story of the Swan Princess at the heart of contemporary issues. On the edge of a lake, Rothbart wants to exploit a fossil energy deposit. When a young girl, Odette, seems to thwart his plans, he transforms her into a swan. Elsewhere, during a celebration, Siegfried defies his father, who wishes to collaborate with Rothbart to build a factory on the edge of the Swan Lake.
Is this a love story or a money and power trap?
